When you think about history in California, you may think of the gold rush or the missions the Spanish created, but there are also petroglyphs to be found. Petroglyphs are drawings, designs and messages carved or pecked into rock. The Corn Springs Oasis about an hour and a half east of Palm Springs gives hikers a chance to see petroglyphs, explore an oasis and even visit an old miner's cabin.individually to retain this template's appearance.Corn Springs Oasis (Campground too)The Corn Springs Oasis & Campground is 10 miles from Interstate 10 on the dirt Corn Springs Road. The petroglyphs are easy to find, just back track down the dirt road, cross the wash and look for the petroglyphs on the north side of the road. You may notice some numbered sign posts and some metal posts, these will help you find the right spot. Once there, start exploring. You may want to do some exploring and climbing to find the various markings. Consider walking up the wash a bit to find more rock art. There are a few marks on the rocks on the south side of the road, but they were harder to find.Miner's cabin (child not included)The Bureau of Land Management says the Chemehuevi Indians lived in this area about 1,100 A.D.Look closely in the area for a sign honoring Gus Lederer, a hermit who lived in the area and welcomed visitors. After getting your fill of rock art, return to the main road and hike west past the campground. About 1 mile past the campground/oasis, you'll find a miner's cabin on a small hill. The cabin is open to the public, but treat it with respect. Wander through the rooms, check out the impressive rock fireplace from inside and out and enjoy the views. Try to imagine living in this far out land in search of riches decades ago. Make sure you sign the guest book. Some articles call this the Little Chad Mill site. If you wander around, you may find some of the remnants of what might have been the mine.Hiking to the petroglyphs and the miner's cabin is about 2.5 miles roundtrip, exploring adds a little more.
